Shades of the pale yellow that suffuses the painting appear not only on the buildings but also the paving stones and the sky, giving the impression that the sun is trying to break through the clouds. In this pre-automobile age, there is no traffic other than two horse-drawn carriages moving unobtrusively in the background, and large parts of the foreground of the painting are taken up with the wet, unusually large cobblestones of the road surface. On the square, a scattering of people are crossing in various directions, sheltering under dark-coloured retractable umbrellas.
